The Little Rock School District (LRSD) marked a historic milestone on the first day of school with the grand opening of the Dr. Marian G. Lacey K-8 Academy.
This state-of-the-art facility, dedicated to the memory of former LRSD Principal Dr. Marion G. Lacey, stands as a testament to the district’s commitment to honoring its legacy while paving the way for future generations. Superintendent Dr. Jermall Wright emphasized the significance of this new school, highlighting it as a shining example of what the district aims to achieve in the coming years.
The new academy, transformed from the former McClellan High School, has retained the school's original colors and mascot. Assistant Principal Danielle Evans expressed her pride in being part of the inaugural staff.
"It is so special," Evans said. "A special feeling to be the first inaugural staff to set foot in this building. It is just amazing.”
Principal Don Porter is particularly enthusiastic about the collaborative and innovative learning environment the new facility offers.
"This space prioritizes and centers collaboration, kind of an innovative hands-on approach to learning," said Porter. "I am excited that the students in this community get to experience that and can call this place home.”
The academy is equipped with 84 classrooms, a cafetorium, a competition gym with a 1,500-person capacity, and cutting-edge programs such as STREAM (Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), AVID, CTE, and Civil Air Patrol, among others.
Students are also eager to take advantage of the new opportunities. Sanaa Oliver, a student and cheerleader at Lacey, expressed her excitement about the new school year, aiming to become a cheer captain while maintaining good grades. Meanwhile, Khryston Williams, a member of the Civil Air Patrol, is looking forward to continuing the unique experiences she had over the summer, including flying in a C-130 and engaging with personnel on a military base.
With its cutting-edge resources and a commitment to excellence, the Marian G. Lacey K-8 Academy is poised to become a cornerstone of educational achievement in the Little Rock School District, ensuring that Dr. Lacey’s legacy will inspire students for generations to come.
"It takes a village," said Principal Porter. "We do it better together."
