LR Southwest Band after their win

It was passion and a love for a certain harmony that drove Taryn Dotson, and other members from the Supersonic Storm of Southwest band to win over 30 trophies.

“Music is much greater than what people think, it can carry them far in life and if you’re thinking about picking up music go for it,” Dotson said.

Now the band is claiming the title as first place in Division 1 for overall band, and first place Auxiliary in the Delta Classic Field show competition.

Davon Wilson, the percussion instructor, describes the moment as breathtaking.

“We know how many hours and what the students have been through to get there and just to see us walk away with it, wow” Wilson said.

Band members said that there’s countless hours of practice that they put in and it’s a daily drive that keeps them focused.

Many said it wouldn’t be possible without their Band Director Jose Holloway.

“I don’t let up, I don’t let them think what the world tries to tell them that a majority minority school cannot be excellent,” Holloway said.

He’s been directing band since the school first opened, pouring plenty of time and care in his members and is proud to watch them win everything they deserve.

“I wanted to make them feel like ‘you’re the show, you’re the star if only just for this moment you’re the star,’ that hopefully will stay with them for the rest of their lives,” Holloway stated.

Holloway is inviting the community to their annual Kranksgiving Battle of the Bands taking place on November 3.
