Last week, our school had the incredible honor of welcoming Vanessa Brantley-Newton, an award-winning and talented author- illustrator known for her engaging storytelling and beautiful artwork.

Vanessa's presentation was engaging and heartfelt. She spoke passionately about the importance of diversity in children's literature, emphasizing how essential it is for young readers to see themselves reflected in the stories they encounter. "When you see characters that look like you, it helps you understand that your story matters," she shared. Her words resonated with many students, sparking discussions about representation and the power of storytelling.

Throughout her visit, Vanessa shared some of her beautiful books, illustrating how stories can bridge cultures and bring people together. She encouraged students to embrace their own unique stories and perspectives, inspiring them to become creators of their own narratives.

After her presentation, many students had the chance to meet Vanessa one-on-one, lighting up as they handed her their favorite books for signing. The joy on their faces as they interacted with the author-illustrator was a sight to behold, a testament to the impact her work has on young readers.

Before she left, she was a guest teacher in three different classes, instructing students on using shapes, colors, and collages to create art. Some of the art that students created in her unique style is on display at Pyramid Art Books & Custom Framing in the art gallery along side Ms. Brantley-Newton's own art.

Vanessa Brantley-Newton's visit not only enriched our students' understanding of diversity in literature but also instilled in them the belief that their voices are valuable. It was a day filled with inspiration, creativity, and the joy of storytelling—a day our students will surely remember for years to come.Smiling twin students and their mother standing behind Ms. Brantley-Newton.Smiling student leaders standing behind a table with Ms. Brantley-Newton holding her book Russian Dolls.
