In 1957, nine students walked through the doors of Little Rock Central High School and into history. What happened inside and outside those doors would resonate far beyond Little Rock, becoming a defining moment in the nation’s struggle to make the promise of equal protection a reality for every American.
Central High was -and remains -more than a school. It is a place where courage met history, where young people helped move a nation forward, and where the enduring power of education, citizenship and standing up for what is right was placed on full display.
As we commemorate the 69th anniversary of the Little Rock Nine, Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site will host a series of programs this week exploring constitutional rights, citizenship, civic engagement and the continuing pursuit of equality.

The evening will bring together four members of the Little Rock Nine, offering a powerful opportunity to hear directly from those who experienced the historic integration of Central High School.
Their stories remind us that history is not only something we remember - it is something we carry forward. The courage of the Little Rock Nine helped open the doors of Central High and, in doing so, helped open a new chapter in our nation’s journey forward.
Central High changed Little Rock. Little Rock changed America. And the courage shown there continues to challenge each generation to continue the work.
