For 40 years, special education teacher Mattie Norman has been a steady presence for students and families at Dr. Marian G. Lacey K-8 Academy in Little Rock. Now, she’s being recognized for that work as KATV’s Teacher of the Month.
Norman teaches in the Little Rock School District, where she said her focus is making students and parents feel supported.
“These are my babies and these are my children and I want them to feel comfortable and we want our parents to know that we are here for them,” Norman said.
Dr. Marian G. Lacey Academy Principal Donald Porter praised Norman’s impact on students and the school community.
“We need more Mattie Norman’s,” Porter said. “It's magical watching her, seriously I could go on and on about her.”
Among the families who credit Norman with making a difference is DeEtta Parker, whose daughter was in Norman’s class for five years. Parker said Norman’s care for students stands out, especially in special education.
“She’s an amazing teacher, she cares for the children, she’s all about the children,” Parker said. “And when it comes to special needs, she sees all their qualities regardless of their disabilities.”
Parker also said Norman’s support extended beyond the school year.
“She would even call check during breaks, stop by my mom's house when my daughter was there, she’d go by and check on her during the summer,” Parker said.
Norman described her work as more than a job.
“God sees me and He put me in the right place and one of my coworkers said my degree is what I paid for, but my calling is what I'm working for,” she said.
