Our Commitment

"A SUPERIOR school in a SUPPORTIVE Community"

As a Leader in Me Lighthouse School and a Professional Learning Community, we are committed to the academic success of each and every scholar. With a focus on ensuring mastery of essential standards for learning, we set goals for our school, grade levels, classrooms, and every scholar for learning. These goals are monitored regularly. Our practices for meeting these goals adjust to meet the needs of all scholars and our school. This means our faculty and staff work collaboratively and are continuously learning to meet the unique needs of every scholar.

Academic Standards & Curriculum

The foundation for teaching and learning at Stephens begins with our Arkansas Academic Standards. To review standards for specific areas and grades visit the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Learning Services Office here.

Literacy

We recognize literacy is foundational to success in life! Our approach to literacy instruction is based on the Science of Reading and is aligned to the Arkansas RISE Initiative. The Science of Reading includes five essential components known as "The Big Five." These components are phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. To support our work the following curriculum resources are used in this critical area of learning:

Math

Early numeracy skills and the development of strong mathematical practices are essential. In addition to anchoring learning with the Arkansas Math Standards, we are also committed to the development of the eight mathematical practices in our scholars. These math practices are:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

  4. Model with mathematics.

  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.

  6. Attend to precision.

  7. Look for and make use of structure.

  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
