Opened in 1952, this structure originally served as a high school in the Pulaski County Special School District. It replaced the original Mabelvale High School, which was destroyed by fire in 1951. When McClellan High School opened in 1965, Mabelvale was converted into a junior high school. It was annexed by the Little Rock School District in 1987 and is named for the community in which it is located. Mabelvale Middle School became a magnet school in 2000. It offers magnet programs in environmental science, information & communications technology and medical investigations. The Environmental Sciences strand offers courses that study the natural world. Students examine biomes and ecosystems and will work to become positive influences in conserving the natural resources on our planet. Medical Investigations offers courses that focus on body systems with an emphasis on keeping the human body working efficiently for a lifetime. The Information Communications Technology strand examines the history and growth of communications and provides practice in oral and visual presentation techniques using the latest technology for the dissemination of information. Additions to the original building were made in 1953, 1965 and 1975. Mabelvale underwent extensive renovations in 2002-04, including new offices, a new media center, cafeteria and new classroom labs to support the school's magnet programs.
