Forest Heights Middle School was named for the section of the city in which it is located and the wooded area that once surrounded it. The school opened in 1955 (at that time, this area was the extreme western edge of Little Rock). Additions to the school were made in 1962, 1968, 1973 and 1975. A major addition, including 36 classrooms, new administrative offices and a new media center, was completed in 1993. The school was reconfigured into the Forest Heights STEM Academy in 2014, the state's only K-8 STEM academy.
