Originally a part of the Pulaski County Special School District, Chicot Elementary was built in 1973 and is named after the street/neighborhood in southwest Little Rock in which it is located. In 1982 Chicot became the home of students with moderate to severe handicaps, and a new wing was added to the building. The LRSD annexed Chicot from Pulaski County in 1987. The school nearly was destroyed by a fire on October 13, 1994; a rebuilt and restored Chicot Elementary opened in March 1995. The recently closed Ish Elementary served as a temporary home for Chicot students and staff while the school was rebuilt. In August 2007 Chicot and Watson elementary schools combined their attendance zones, and Chicot opened as a primary school for pre-kindergarten - 2nd grade students for the purpose of expanding the district's pre-K program in the Southwest Little Rock area.
