Important Message From LRSD Superintendent Mike Poore Regarding School Closings

Please take time to read this important message from LRSD Superintendent Mike Poore regarding school plans being implemented at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year.

February 10, 2017

Dear LRSD Parents and Community Stakeholders:

The decision to close schools is never easy.  We appreciate and value the extensive input provided by students, parents, staff and community members over the past several months. Those contributions, along with recommendations from the 2014 Fanning Howey facilities study, and our team of experienced educators, formed the basis for our comprehensive plan for academic excellence, school choice, and financial sustainability. That plan includes the closure of Franklin, Wilson and Woodruff campuses and the reassignment of Hamilton ALE at the end of this school year.   Commissioner Johnny Key, who serves as the board for the Little Rock School District, has approved the recommendation for closure and realignment of the following schools:

School   Assignment
Franklin   Closure
Students will attend Stephens
Plans for repurposing will be developed with community input
Wilson   Closure
Students will attend Western Hills, Romine, Bale and Brady
Repurposed with Hamilton ALE program relocating to Wilson
Woodruff

Closure
Pre‐K program students will attend Carver and Martin Luther King
Plans for repurposing will be developed with community input

Hamilton Learning Academy   Repurposed
Potentially reconfigured to a K‐8 campus, incorporating
Bale Elementary
Future Hamilton ALE students will move to Wilson’s campus

We are committed to moving forward to provide a seamless transition for students and staff.  We also will work diligently to maintain our partnerships with organizations that have been supporting the impacted campuses. As we make these transitions, we will solicit additional community input for repurposing Franklin and Woodruff.  It’s my job to ensure that every child in our district has equal access to high quality schools with great principals, great teachers, and a positive culture for teaching and learning.

I have appointed Dr. Sadie Mitchell, associate superintendent for elementary schools, to lead the transition team.  She is an experienced administrator, whose leadership included the successful reconfiguration of Baseline Academy and Forest Heights STEM Academy.

Additionally we are reopening the application period for Carver Magnet Elementary to all students February 10‐ 15, 2017 and students attending the closed campuses will be given first priority.  Applications may be submitted at the Student Assignment Office at 501 Sherman Street during business hours, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and our Student Registration team will be available to assist parents with any additional questions.

We will continue to provide information on LRSD.org and via our parent notification system, Blackboard.  Thank you for being a part of the LRSD family.

Sincerely,
