     The Little Rock School District Child Nutrition Department is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children (18 and under) without charge. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, or disability.  Meals will be provided at the sites as follows:

Each year, LRSD invites volunteers to come into our schools for Jane Mendel Reading Day in November. The goal is to have a reader in every elementary classroom. Volunteers are asked to donate 30 minutes of their time to read to a classroom of elementary students. Readers can share their favorite story or read a recommendation from the school librarian.

Tamika N. Gore, a teacher at David O. Dodd Elementary, was honored as the winner of the 2011 Marian G. Lacey Educator of the Year award at the Little Rock School District’s annual Crystal Awards banquet at the Embassy Suites Hotel on May 2.

Gore, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Dodd, loves working with these very young students and instilling within them a love of learning that will stay with them throughout their lives. She says, “I love the conversations children have, the laughter and love they bring to the room, and their eagerness to learn.”

Also honored at the banquet were Shannon L. Smith of Terry Elementary, who was named Elementary School Teacher of the Year; Elizabeth K. McFadden of Pulaski Heights Middle School, who received Middle School Teacher of the Year honors; and Debra Murray of Parkview Magnet High School, who was honored as High School Teacher of the Year.

The Little Rock School District values its teachers, and the Crystal Awards banquet is one way educators are honored and rewarded for their dedication to educating the students of Little Rock. Throughout the fall semester, the Little Rock School District in conjunction with the Arkansas Department of Health hosted a series of free flu vaccination clinics for students at various schools. On October 25, Arkansas First Lady Ginger Beebe attended the flu clinic at Terry Elementary after school.

Arkansas First Lady Beebe walked around providing students with moral support while receiving their shots.  She even brought along her friend, Flat Stanley, for extra support for the children. Mrs. Beebe also engaged with the parents, teachers, nurses and others on staff.

On Monday, November 1, the Little Rock School District in cooperation with the Arkansas Department of Health will begin holding free flu vaccination clinics at secondary schools, beginning with Dunbar Middle School. Secondary school flu clinics will be held during school hours.  Parents of the student(s) who would like to have their child/children vaccinated at the school must complete the parental permission form and the Health Department consent form, which can found on the LRSD website (www.LRSD.org), along with the list of schools and times where these flu vaccine clinics will be held.

This year’s flu clinics are only for the school-age children who are enrolled in the Little Rock School District. If the families of the students would like to also receive the flu vaccine, they may do so at one of the Arkansas Health Department’s mass clinics, one of which will be held on Wednesday, November 3, at the Arkansas State Fair Grounds.

Terry Elementary launched its first annual Watch D.O.G.S. event on September 28, a Dads and Kids Pizza Night, and more than 300 dads and children attended. This fathering initiative of the National Center for Fathering was a huge success.

This male involvement program is designed to provide positive adult male role models to spend meaningful time with students in the school setting.  Schools and students gain an extra set of ears and eyes, thereby increasing a sense of security in the schools. Within its first week of implementation at Terry, a total of seven dads have volunteered at least one day through the Watch D.O.G.S program.

When Watch D.O.G.S. invest a day at school, they can learn how better to partner with the school and meet the educational goals of students. Mr. Thad Pearson, the guest speaker, reinforced that more positive male role models are needed in the school setting. Special thanks go out Iberia Bank for sponsoring the never-ending pizza buffet!
