Mayor Mark Stodola announced at King Elementary the launch of Little Rock Serves, the city's high-impact service plan that leverages citizen service strategies to address three priority community needs: childhood obesity, neighborhood stabliziation and enviornmental stability.
The announcement focused on Love Your School, an impact inititative developed in partnership with Little Rock schools to reduce childhood obesity. "Over the last decade we've seen a frightening growth in childhood obesity in Little Rock and th mid-south, and we are committed to do all we can do to partner with our schools to turn around this condition," said Mayor Stodola.
The plan will work with schools to combine garden-enhancement projects and the Walk it Out! program to provide healthy food and vigorous activity on a regular basis. King Elementary EAST Lab students are well aware of the need for a community garden at their school. In fact, students already have a plan for the garden's layout complete with a white picket fence.
King students capped off the launch by planting a variety of fruits and vegatable plans from strawberries to tomatoes to peppers.
